Make the Switch

There’s never been a more important time to make the switch to renewable energy.

Fossil fuels are getting more expensive and less reliable. Big energy companies are putting up energy prices while recording record profits, and our communities are paying for it.

Analysis from Rewiring Australia has suggested that a transition toward battery-powered renewable energy could save families up to $3,450 per household.

I’m calling on the NSW government to fund:

  • a $20m electrification pilot in the Northern Rivers, including the rollout of publicly owned community batteries that are independent from the existing electricity grid
  • Rebates of up to $3,000 and zero-interest loans of up to $3,000 to support households to transition from fossil fuel power and on to solar batteries

Our region is hooked up to a massive, privatised electricity grid that completely falls apart in a crisis. The government has no plans to get us off the grid and onto a reliable source of renewable energy.”

Right now, Australian governments are spending four times as much on subsidies for fossil fuels than they do on renewables. This is economically ridiculous, given that demand for fossil fuels is decreasing. Labor needs to have the courage to stand up to its coal and gas donors and invest in our communities instead.

We need to start this transition before the next disaster strikes. That means electrification pilots in the Northern Rivers, rebates for households to get onto solar, and massive investment in publicly owned, self-sufficient renewables.

Fossil fuels are becoming more scarce, harder to transmit, and more dangerous for our planet. In a cost-of-living crisis and a climate crisis, it’s never been more important to make the switch to renewables.
