COME TO THE PUBLIC MEETING - SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS

The huge sand mine proposed for Newrybar Swamp Road will severely impact upon fragile coastal ecosystems and the Lennox Head community and everyone accessing the coast along Ross Lane.

The proposal is for a mine extracting 3.6 million tonnes of sand over 30 years from the wetlands near Ross Lane and along Swampy Creek Road, within metres of waterways and on a coastal flood plain.

Twenty years ago our community entered into a covenant with the developer on the understanding that at the end of 20 years the site would be remediated. That is what we are calling for now - the honouring of that promise! Not to extend and expand the current mine.

Our waterways and ocean will inevitably be affected by acid sulphate and other toxins, and the surrounding environment is already under pressure from residential development. It is likely to spell the end of at least one threatened species of frog and impact on other wildlife and biodiversity.

The community will suffer, with a huge spike in truck movements on Ross Lane and the coast road – an estimated 24 new movements every hour. Ross Lane is already a black spot for drivers: imagine the dangers presented by such an increase.

I’ll be joining locals opposed to the new mine at a public action meeting at 6pm this Wednesday, 9 May at Lennox Head Community Centre.
