The Richmond River is the lifeblood of our regional biodiversity. It provides the habitat and breeding ground for fish; water for irrigating crops and is enjoyed recreationally by all of us.
However, the results of a recent health report card on the river is poor - and our river desperately needs improvement.
The Richmond Ecohealth Project 2014 Final Technical Report revealed that the Richmond River has an overall grade of D+, ranging from an F in the Wilsons River and upper Richmond estuary to a C in the headwater streams of the catchment.
The report also made some recommendations to improve the river health including;reducing diffuse sources and sediment loads, reducing stock access to the river banks, re-vegetating riparian zones to increase buffering and actively restoring riparian vegetation.
I am seeking to bring together local community groups, councils, scientists and concerned individuals to develop a plan to restore this vital environmental asset to full health.

The member for Ballina, Tamara Smith MP welcomes the announcement of $4 million in funding to improve facilities for the Ballina Byron Gateway Airport.
“Since I was elected we have seen a huge increase in infrastructure spending in the Ballina electorate and it is so overdue,” Ms Smith said.
Spending increases have included:
- $88 million spent on the construction of Byron Central Hospital
- $92 million spent on upgrading the Pacific Highway between Pimlico and Teven.
- $200,000 in grant funding to Marine Rescue NSW to support the construction of the Ballina Marine Rescue Tower
The $4 million in funding to improve facilities at the airport is to accommodate increased visitor numbers in the Ballina and Byron areas.
