Celebrating Seniors and Strengthening Support for Older Australians

Member for Ballina, Tamara Smith MP, is encouraging the community to celebrate the important role older people play across the Northern Rivers as part of the NSW Seniors Festival, which runs from 2–15 March.

The annual festival is the largest celebration of seniors in the Southern Hemisphere and recognises the invaluable contribution older Australians make to our communities. With events taking place across the state and locally, it serves as a reminder to acknowledge and celebrate the seniors in our lives.

“Our seniors are the quiet backbone of our communities and are responsible for holding so much of our social fabric together,” Ms Smith said.

“Across the Ballina electorate we are incredibly fortunate to have so many seniors who are generous with their time, energy and commitment, often playing a vital role in the day-to-day running of community groups that support our region.”

As the NSW Greens spokesperson for Older People, Ms Smith said the festival is also an important opportunity to reflect on how communities and governments can continue supporting older Australians to live safely, remain connected, and age with dignity.

“Celebrating seniors also means making sure older people have access to the care and support they need as they age,” Ms Smith said.

“Across regional communities like the Ballina electorate, many families are struggling to access in-home care services or secure places in residential aged care facilities.”

Ms Smith said the shortage of available care options is placing pressure not only on older people and their families, but also on local health services.

“When older residents can’t access appropriate care or support, they can end up staying in hospital longer than necessary simply because there are no suitable options available,” she said.

“That places additional strain on our already stretched regional hospitals and health workers.”

Ms Smith is calling on NSW Treasury to prioritise funding that strengthens aged care and support services for older Australians living in regional communities.

“Access to care and support shouldn’t depend on your postcode,” she said.

“Regional communities deserve properly funded aged care services, more support for in-home care, and better pathways for older people to remain in their communities as they age.”

“Our seniors have helped build the communities we enjoy today, and ensuring they have access to appropriate care and support is one of the most important ways we can give back.”
