Member for Ballina, Tamara Smith MP, has congratulated three outstanding locals who were recently recognised through state award programs celebrating the contributions of women and seniors across NSW.

Among those honoured were Ms Kylie Jacky, named the 2026 Local Woman of the Year for the Ballina Electorate, and Ms Pippy Wardell and Mr Robert Whiston, recognised as the electorate’s 2026 Local Seniors of the Year.

Ms Smith said recognition programs such as the Local Woman of the Year Awards and the Local Seniors of the Year Awards provide an important opportunity to celebrate the people who quietly strengthen local communities.

“Across our region there are so many incredible people who volunteer their time, energy and care to selflessly support others,” she said.

“Taking the time to recognise those contributions reminds us just how strong and generous our communities are.”

In honour of NSW Women’s Week, women from across the state were recognised for their remarkable contributions to their communities.

Ms Kylie Jacky was nominated by Ms Smith as Local Woman of the Year for the Ballina electorate in recognition of her outstanding leadership as Chair of Jali Local Aboriginal Land Council.

“Ms Jacky’s leadership has helped bring people back to Country and ensure the community can rebuild in a way that is resilient and sustainable for the future. I am thrilled to see dedication and commitment recognised.”

In celebration of NSW Seniors Festival, Ms Pippy Wardell and Mr Robert Whiston were also recognised as the 2026 Ballina Local Seniors of the Year for their extraordinary contributions to their communities.

Ms Wardell was nominated for her longstanding contribution to the Byron Shire through her instrumental role in the Byron Community Centre’s Seniors Program’s accessible yoga classes.

“Ms Wardell’s volunteer work supporting seniors in fostering connection, wellbeing and active ageing in her accessible yoga classes is incredibly inspiring to see.” Ms Smith said.

Mr Robert “Bob Can Do” Whiston was nominated for his extraordinary volunteer contribution to the Wardell Neighbourhood Centre. Mr Whiston leads initiatives such as the Return and Earn recycling program, community pizza project and fresh produce program.

“Mr Whiston has supported hundreds of Wardell residents through his practical skills and tireless service. His dedication to his community is remarkably inspiring.”

“The Local Senior of the Year Awards are a wonderful way to recognise the incredible contributions seniors make to our communities,” Ms Smith said.

“I was overwhelmed by the number of nominations my office received this year, which speaks volumes about the generosity, kindness and community spirit we see right across the Ballina electorate.”

“Our region is full of people who go above and beyond for others, and it’s fantastic to see their work celebrated.”
