It's time to Restore the Richmond River

As our climate changes, the Northern Rivers region is experiencing more frequent and severe floods — and with that, we’ve seen an increase in major fish kills in the Richmond River. These events are devastating for our community, local economy, and environment.

The Richmond River is part of a vast, interconnected system of waterways that flow through our region. Following the recent mass fish kill in the Ballina Shire, it’s clear that restoring the Tuckean Swamp is a crucial part of the solution.

The resilience of our shire is deeply tied to the health of our waterways. Supporting the recovery of the Richmond River is essential for the long-term wellbeing of our environment and our communities.

We are calling for:

  1. The establishment of a state-based authority to provide overarching coordination among the many stakeholders currently involved in the health and resilience of the Richmond River.
  2. Long-term investment to strengthen the Richmond River’s resilience in the face of ongoing climate change, this would include;
    1. Funding for the restoration of land surrounding existing drainage systems (barrages), which are known contributors to fish kill events.
    2. Support for all stakeholders, including landholders to transition crop and grazing land into rehabilitated ecosystems that help reduce fish kills and blackwater events.
