Regulate holiday letting in Byron

Short term holiday letting needs to be regulated in Byron Shire

The Minister for Fair Trading recently announced new legislation which would allow house owners who are resident to put their homes up for holiday letting 365 days a year in areas outside of Sydney. Local Councils, not the State Government, should be allowed to decide limits on the maximum number of days a home is available for short term holiday letting per year.

To the Minister for Fair Trading

Our community and local councils want to be able to rein in short term holiday letting platforms and put reasonable limits in place.

We, the undersigned, call on the New South Wales government to:

  • Rethink its short term holiday letting legislation and give regional communities a fair say in their neighbourhoods.

  • Let local Councils determine the maximum number of days a host can offer their residence for short term holiday letting, and

  • Provide a level playing field for legitimate accommodation providers by insisting that holiday lets available for more than the maximum number of days seek developmental approvals and be subject to the same regulations.
